Gum Infection Treatment
Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums. When the bacteria that cause gum disease are allowed to flourish, they can cause an infection in the gum tissue. This infection deteriorates the health of the gums, causing them to recede, bleed and begin to shrink. Stopping the infection is the first step to restoring gum and oral health. Removing the bacteria, plaque and tartar from the teeth through deep cleanings is necessary, along with treatments to fight the existing infection.
Scaling and Root Planing
One of the most effective treatments for periodontal disease is deep cleanings of the roots of the teeth. When the gums recede, it allows bacteria to hide deeper on the tooth root, creating plaque and tartar below the gum line. The hard tartar irritates the gums, causing them to recede even further. Scaling and root planing remove (scales) the tartar from the roots and smoothes (planing) the root surface. This removes the bacteria and allows the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the roots for restored gum health.
